Post-Holiday Reset: Undoing December's Damage

By late January, the body is carrying the accumulated load of the holiday season plus the cold of deep winter. The tension that built through December, the sleep disruption of the holiday weeks, the physical demands of travel and hosting, the cold that's been contracting muscle tissue since November — it's a lot. And most of it doesn't resolve on its own just because the calendar changed.

What Specifically Needs Addressing

The post-holiday physical profile is recognizable in clients who come in for January resets:

The neck and shoulders are carrying the social and stress load of December — the extended family interactions, the work-year-end push, the general ambient pressure of the season.

The lower back is carrying the physical load — the hosting, the travel, the sitting in uncomfortable chairs at holiday dinners.

The overall nervous system is running at a higher-than-normal baseline, which shows up as poor sleep quality, a sense of not quite recovering between activities, and a kind of baseline irritability that doesn't match the actual stressors of January.

What a Reset Session Focuses On

A post-holiday reset session is less about specific injury and more about clearing accumulated load. It typically runs longer than a maintenance session — 90 minutes tends to be more effective than 60 for this particular presentation — and prioritizes the parasympathetic shift alongside the muscular work.

Noting at booking that this is a post-holiday reset is useful. The approach adjusts.

Why January Is Actually the Best Time

The temptation in January is to white-knuckle through the cold and the darkness until spring. The body doesn't respond well to that approach. A session in January — one that actually addresses what December did — sets a better baseline for the rest of the winter than waiting until the snow melts.
