Massage and the Immune System During Cold and Flu Season

The research on massage and immune function is more developed than most people realize. It doesn't support treating massage as a cure for anything, but the evidence for immune-adjacent benefits is real and worth understanding.

What the Research Actually Shows

Multiple studies have shown that therapeutic massage increases natural killer cell activity — the immune cells responsible for identifying and destroying virally infected cells. A single 45-minute Swedish massage produced measurable increases in natural killer cell count in healthy adults in research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

The mechanism is partly related to cortisol reduction. Elevated cortisol suppresses immune function as a side effect of its primary stress-response role. When massage reduces cortisol, the immune system gets more of the resources it was competing with stress hormones for.

What This Means in Practice

It means regular massage during cold and flu season is a legitimate immune-support strategy, not a wellness marketing claim. It doesn't guarantee the recipient won't get sick — nothing does — but maintaining lower cortisol levels and higher natural killer cell activity through the winter months is a meaningful contribution to immune resilience.

The appropriate framing: massage is one component of immune support, alongside sleep, hydration, nutrition, and not being in enclosed spaces with sick people for extended periods. It's not a replacement for any of those, but it's additive.

When Not to Book

An active infection — fever, acute symptoms, early stages of illness — is not the right time for a massage. The therapist's health and other clients' health both matter, and a session on a compromised body doesn't produce the same benefit as a session on a healthy one. The right time for immune-support massage is prevention, not treatment.

Hands of Eden follows a straightforward policy: clients with active symptoms are asked to reschedule without penalty. The rescheduling fee is waived for illness-related cancellations with notice.
